Itchy skin during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Itchy skin in pregnancy may come from stretching, dryness, irritation, or a pregnancy-related rash, while some patterns need prompt maternity assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Common contributors
- Stretching, dryness, heat, sweat, and product irritation
- Report promptly
- Palms or soles, night itching, or little visible rash
- Safer first step
- Cool the skin and use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser
Why pregnancy can change the skin
Stretching skin may feel tight and itchy, especially over the abdomen and breasts. Heat, sweat, wool, fragranced products, and dry air can worsen irritation. Contact Dermatitis can appear where a product touches the skin; Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or Hives may also flare or first become noticeable. A rash with small bumps or plaques is different from intense itching with little visible change, so describe both.
Itching on the palms or soles, itching that is severe at night, or itching without a clear rash should be discussed promptly with the maternity team. Those features do not identify a diagnosis by themselves, but they can change which checks are needed.
Skin care that is usually gentle
Take brief lukewarm showers, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, and apply a plain moisturiser after patting dry. Wear loose breathable layers, keep cool, and use a cool cloth instead of scratching. Avoid starting oral medicines, essential oils, or medicated creams without checking pregnancy suitability. Record when the itching began, where it appears, and any new product or medicine.
When to call your maternity team
Contact the maternity team promptly for intense or worsening itching, palm or sole involvement, night-time symptoms, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or reduced fetal movement. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, blistering, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. A painful or infected-looking rash also needs assessment.
Questions to take along
Does the pattern suggest dry skin, Contact Dermatitis, eczema, or a pregnancy-specific problem? Do I need an examination or blood checks? Which moisturiser or medicine is suitable in pregnancy? What changes should prompt an urgent call?

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy itching happen without a rash?
Yes. Itching may occur with little visible change, and that pattern should be discussed with the maternity team, especially when intense or worse at night.
What can I use before speaking with my clinician?
Cooling measures, loose clothing, and a plain fragrance-free moisturiser are reasonable starting measures; check medicines before use.
