Itchy Skin on Face: What to Know

Itch after a new cleanser, sunscreen, cosmetic, hair product, or mask can point to Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis may cause dry, inflamed, recurring areas, while Hives tend to be raised and change location. Flaking around the brows, nose, or hairline may accompany irritation or another skin condition. Scabies can cause severe itch, often worse at night, with symptoms in close contacts. Psoriasis can affect the face as well as other areas, but facial rashes have several possible causes and should not be self-diagnosed from appearance alone.

Stop any newly introduced facial product and rinse with lukewarm water. Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser and avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, essential oils, and fragranced products until the skin settles. Do not apply a medicated cream near the eyes or lips unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised it. A cool compress can reduce the urge to scratch. Keep makeup tools clean and avoid sharing them while the cause is unclear.

Seek prompt advice for swelling around the eyes, crusting, oozing, increasing warmth, or a rash that is spreading. Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or sudden widespread symptoms after a food, medicine, or product. Arrange a review if the itch lasts, recurs, affects sleep, or involves the eyelids.

Ask whether the distribution suggests contact irritation, eczema, hives, or another condition, and which products are safe near your eyes. Bring a list of recent cosmetics, skincare, hair products, medicines, and photographs showing how the rash changed.
