Itchy Skin From Sunburn: What to Know

Sun exposure can injure the outer skin barrier. The affected area may feel hot, tender, tight, dry, or itchy, and peeling can follow as damaged surface cells shed. Scratching may create small breaks that sting and allow infection to enter. Itch that starts after a new sunscreen, fragrance, or after-sun product may instead point to contact dermatitis, while widespread raised welts suggest hives rather than a straightforward sunburn.

Move out of the sun and use cool, damp compresses for short periods. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and avoid peeling loose skin or opening blisters. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an appropriate anti-itch product is suitable for you; do not apply numbing products or steroid creams to broken skin without guidance.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or signs of dehydration. Urgent help is needed for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or a severe reaction after a product. If itching continues after the burn has settled, keeps returning, or affects unburned skin, arrange an assessment to check for another cause.

Ask whether the burn needs examination, which moisturiser or anti-itch medicine fits your skin, and how to protect the area while it heals. Mention any blisters, medicines, new products, fever, or medical conditions that may affect treatment.
