Itchy Skin With Diarrhea and Fatigue: What to Know

The symptoms may begin together during an illness, or the itch may be a separate skin problem occurring while diarrhoea causes tiredness. New medicines, supplements, foods, or personal-care products can affect more than one body system. Ongoing diarrhoea can lead to fluid loss, weakness, and dry or itchy skin. A rash, fever, abdominal pain, weight change, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine gives a clinician useful direction. These symptoms do not identify one diagnosis on their own.

Drink frequent small amounts of fluid and consider an oral rehydration product if a pharmacist recommends one. Eat simple foods as tolerated and avoid alcohol and anything that clearly worsens symptoms. Use a bland moisturiser, short lukewarm showers, and loose clothing for the itch. Write down when each symptom began, stool frequency and appearance, recent travel, sick contacts, medicines, supplements, and foods. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without speaking with the prescriber.

Seek urgent care for blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading rash. Prompt assessment is also needed for high fever, marked weakness, yellow skin or eyes, or diarrhoea that continues or worsens. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions may become dehydrated sooner.
