Itchy Skin Bumps on Arms: Possible Causes and Care

Dry, rough bumps that persist may occur with eczema or keratosis-like follicle irritation. Raised patches that appear suddenly and move or fade may be hives. Bumps after a new lotion, plant, fabric, or cleaning product can reflect contact dermatitis. Grouped or linear spots may follow bites, while intense night-time itching with similar symptoms in household contacts needs assessment for scabies. Thick scale can occur with psoriasis. A clinician may need to feel the bumps and inspect nearby skin before naming the cause.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Wear loose, breathable sleeves and keep nails short to limit damage from scratching. Stop newly introduced products one at a time and wash clothing or bedding if bites are possible. Avoid squeezing bumps or applying strong steroid, antibiotic, or combination creams without advice, because the wrong product can obscure the rash or worsen an infection.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction. Arrange a medical review for painful, hot, draining, bruised, blistering, or persistent bumps, or when itching prevents sleep. Fever or feeling unwell alongside a new rash also warrants prompt assessment.
