Itchy Skin from an Allergy: What to Know

An allergy can cause hives, redness, swelling, or an itchy rash after exposure to something the immune system reacts to. Contact Dermatitis may be limited to areas touched by a product, metal, plant, or chemical and can develop with repeated exposure. Atopic Dermatitis and other skin conditions can also itch, so an itchy patch is not proof of allergy. Note whether symptoms began soon after eating, taking a medicine, using a product, or touching a material, and whether they improve after avoiding it.

Stop a suspected new skin product and rinse exposed skin gently. Do not deliberately retry a suspected food or medicine trigger. Use a cool compress, loose clothing, and a fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin is dry. A pharmacist or doctor can help select an antihistamine or topical treatment after considering your age, pregnancy status, other medicines, and medical history.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, wheezing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek same-day medical advice for widespread hives, facial swelling, a reaction after a new medicine, or skin that becomes painful or blistered. Arrange review when episodes recur without a clear trigger.
