Itchy Skin All Over the Body: What to Know

Dry, irritated skin may feel tight, rough, or flaky, especially after hot showers or frequent washing. A new product, detergent, fabric, medicine, or food can trigger an itchy rash. Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Hives, Psoriasis, or Scabies may produce different patterns. Scabies often causes intense itching and can affect close contacts, while hives tend to create raised areas that come and go. Itching without much of a rash can also need a broader medical review.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick moisturiser soon after bathing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and keep fingernails short to reduce skin damage from scratching. Pause newly introduced skincare, detergent, or fragrance products and record when the itching began, where it is strongest, and whether anyone close to you is itchy. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-itch treatment is suitable for you.

Seek urgent help for itching with swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading blistering. Arrange prompt medical care if the skin is painful, hot, draining fluid, or accompanied by fever, or if itching is severe, widespread, or disturbing sleep. Persistent itching without a clear skin cause also deserves an appointment.
