Itchy skin all over the body

Dry air, frequent hot washing, harsh cleansers, and new medicines can cause generalised itch. Skin conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Hives, or Scabies may also cause itching; some begin with subtle changes that are hard to see. Scabies often causes intense itch and may affect close contacts, so household symptoms are worth mentioning.

When there is little or no rash, a clinician may ask about medicines, sleep, weight change, thirst, bowel or urinary changes, and other symptoms. These details help decide whether the skin alone needs assessment or whether further checks are appropriate. Widespread itch does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Use short lukewarm showers, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick plain moisturiser after washing. Keep nails short, wear soft breathable clothing, and try a cool compress instead of scratching. Review recently added medicines and supplements with a pharmacist or clinician rather than stopping a prescribed medicine on your own.

Note when the itch began, where it is strongest, whether it worsens at night, and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms. Photographing any intermittent rash can help if the skin looks clear during an appointment.

Book a medical review for unexplained widespread itch that persists, disrupts sleep, causes skin breaks, or does not improve with gentle skin care. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, rapidly spreading hives, confusion, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
