What should you know about itchy scaly skin?

Fine scaling over several dry areas may follow frequent washing, low humidity, or irritating products. Thick, sharply defined patches can occur with Psoriasis, while greasy scale around the scalp, eyebrows, ears, or nose may fit Seborrheic Dermatitis. A ring-shaped, expanding patch can suggest Ringworm; lighter or darker finely scaling patches on the trunk can occur with Tinea Versicolor. These clues overlap, and scratching can alter the appearance.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and pat skin dry rather than rubbing. Apply a bland moisturiser soon after bathing and repeat when skin feels tight; Emollient Therapy can be discussed if dryness keeps returning. Avoid picking scale and pause new fragranced products until the cause is clearer. Do not share towels, clothing, or razors if a fungal infection is possible. A clinician can examine the edge, colour, and distribution of the patches before choosing an antifungal or anti-inflammatory treatment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if scaling persists despite gentle care, spreads, repeatedly cracks, or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt care for warmth, increasing pain, pus, fever, rapidly worsening redness, facial or eye involvement, or widespread blistering. Urgent help is needed for swelling of the lips or tongue or trouble breathing.

Ask whether the pattern fits Psoriasis, Ringworm, Seborrheic Dermatitis, or another cause; whether a skin scraping is useful; which moisturiser or medicine suits the body area; and how long to try it before returning.
