Itchy runny nose and watery eyes: what to know

Allergic rhinitis commonly causes an itchy nose, repeated sneezing, clear nasal drainage, and watery or itchy eyes after exposure to pollen, pets, or house dust mites. A common cold may also cause a runny nose, but sore throat, cough, tiredness, or feeling unwell may be more prominent. Influenza and COVID-19 can include respiratory symptoms and fever. Sinusitis becomes more relevant when congestion is joined by facial pressure, thick drainage, or symptoms that persist or worsen.

Note where and when symptoms start, then reduce exposure to the suspected trigger. Wash your face and hands after outdoor exposure, keep bedroom dust low, and avoid smoke. Saline nasal rinsing may clear mucus when performed with safe prepared or appropriately treated water. Drink fluids and rest if you feel unwell. A pharmacist can advise on allergy medication or other symptom relief after checking your age, pregnancy status, and current medicines.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical advice for persistent high fever, severe facial pain or swelling, eye swelling, dehydration, or symptoms that improve and then become worse. Consider testing and follow local guidance if respiratory symptoms follow a relevant exposure or occur with fever.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with allergy, a cold, influenza, COVID-19, or sinusitis; which treatment is suitable; and whether testing or follow-up is needed.
