Itchy red puffy eyes: what to know

Both eyes becoming itchy and watery after pollen, dust, cosmetics, or a new product can fit an allergic or irritant reaction. Swelling limited to the lids may follow rubbing or inflammation along the lash line. Under-eye bags, droopy eyelids, and tear-trough hollows are appearance concerns that do not by themselves explain acute itch and redness. A one-sided painful swelling, sticky discharge, light sensitivity, or a feeling that something is stuck deserves medical attention rather than cosmetic treatment.

Stop new eye makeup, creams, contact lenses, and suspected irritants until symptoms settle; do not share towels or eye products. Wash hands before touching the area, avoid rubbing, and use a cool clean compress over closed lids. Do not place non-eye products or homemade solutions in the eye. If symptoms began after a product or exposure, keep its name and timing available for a clinician or pharmacist.

Seek urgent care for reduced or blurred vision, significant eye pain, severe light sensitivity, injury, a bulging eye, rapidly increasing swelling, or difficulty moving the eye. Emergency help is needed with breathing trouble, tongue or facial swelling, or faintness. Arrange review for persistent redness, recurrent episodes, thick discharge, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer.
