Itchy red eyes with discharge: what to know

Conjunctivitis can make the eye surface red and produce watery, sticky, or thicker discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly causes itching in both eyes, watering, and puffiness, especially after exposure to pollen, dust, or another trigger. Irritation from smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, or a foreign particle can look similar. The discharge pattern, whether one or both eyes are affected, and the presence of pain or blurred vision help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye, gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad, and avoid rubbing. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have settled and a clinician says they are safe to resume. Do not share towels, pillows, or cosmetics. A cool clean compress may ease itching and swelling. If symptoms follow an obvious irritant, move away from it and rinse the eye with clean water.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, marked swelling, reduced or blurred vision, injury, chemical exposure, or a feeling that something remains in the eye. Seek urgent help if redness is severe, symptoms worsen quickly, or you wear contact lenses and develop pain or vision change. A clinician should assess discharge that persists, returns, or affects a young child.

Ask whether the discharge pattern suggests allergy, infection, or irritation; whether you should use drops; how long to avoid contact lenses; and what changes should trigger an urgent review.
