Itchy red bumps near the groin: what to know

Warm, moist skin folds experience rubbing from movement and clothing. Intertrigo may cause soreness and redness in a fold; yeast can sometimes add itch, scaling, or small spots at the edge. Shaving, fragranced products, tight clothing, and sweat can produce a similar-looking reaction.

The location alone does not identify the cause. Note whether the rash is in a fold, affects the genitals, has a clear border, smells unusual, or follows a new product. A clinician can check the skin and advise whether an antifungal treatment is appropriate.

Wash gently, rinse well, and pat the area dry rather than rubbing. Change out of damp underwear or exercise clothing and choose breathable, loose-fitting garments. Avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, powders that clump, and scratching.

Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician directs you, because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to persist. If a topical antifungal is recommended, follow the product directions and keep the skin dry; stop and seek advice if it causes marked irritation.

Arrange an assessment if the rash spreads, recurs, becomes painful, cracks, drains, or does not improve with appropriate care. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, rapidly worsening pain, fever, skin discoloration, or a genital rash with significant symptoms.

Ask whether this is intertrigo, a skin yeast infection, contact irritation, or another condition; whether the genital area is involved; and which treatment and duration fit the diagnosis.
