Itchy rash under arms and groin: what should you know?

When both armpits and groin folds are affected, moisture and rubbing may contribute to Intertrigo. A sharp, scaly border or gradual outward spread can fit Ringworm. New deodorant, wash, fabric, or intimate product exposure can trigger Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis may recur in several areas. Heat Rash follows sweating. Scabies becomes a possibility when night-time itch affects close contacts. A rash that began after a new medicine may be Drug Rash and deserves medical advice.

Wash gently and dry every fold carefully, especially after exercise. Choose loose, breathable clothing, change damp underwear promptly, and avoid fragranced products until the skin settles. Do not share towels or clothing. Avoid applying several medicated creams together: a steroid can change the appearance of Ringworm, while combination products may irritate sensitive fold skin. Record when it started, what touches the areas, and whether there is scale, odour, cracking, discharge, or soreness.

Book an assessment if the rash affects multiple folds, keeps returning, spreads, or fails to improve with gentle drying and avoidance of irritants. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, severe pain, pus, skin breakdown, or a widespread blistering or peeling eruption. A clinician may need to distinguish inflammation from fungal or other infection before recommending treatment.

Ask which cause best fits the locations and edges, whether testing is needed, how to keep the folds dry without irritating them, and whether household members need assessment if scabies is suspected.
