Itchy rash under armpit: what should you know?

Redness after a new deodorant, soap, detergent, or shaving product can fit Contact Dermatitis. A moist, tender rash in the fold may fit Intertrigo, while a ring-like scaly edge can suggest Ringworm. Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis may cause recurring itch and dry scale. Heat Rash can follow sweating. Scabies is more concerning when itching is intense at night or household contacts itch too. A new widespread rash after medicine needs prompt medical advice because Drug Rash can involve more than the underarm.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat the fold dry, and pause recently introduced fragranced products. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of sweaty clothes. Avoid scratching, shaving over broken skin, and sharing towels. Do not apply a steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream at random; the wrong product can irritate skin or blur the pattern a clinician needs to see. Take a clear photo and note exposures, spread, and whether the skin is wet, cracked, scaly, or painful.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the rash keeps returning, spreads, develops scale or drainage, or does not settle after avoiding an obvious irritant. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, warmth with fever, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a blistering or peeling rash. A clinician can inspect the fold and choose treatment based on the pattern.

Ask whether the pattern suggests dermatitis, Intertrigo, Ringworm, or another cause; whether a skin scraping or other test is needed; which product is safe for the underarm; and what changes should prompt an earlier review.
