Itchy rash treatment: choosing the right approach

Atopic Dermatitis often benefits from regular moisturising and a prescribed anti-inflammatory plan. Contact Dermatitis improves when the responsible product or material is identified and avoided. Ringworm needs antifungal treatment, while Scabies requires a plan that addresses close contacts and the environment. A rash that begins after a medicine may be a Drug Rash and should be discussed with the prescriber before the next dose; do not stop essential treatment without advice unless emergency symptoms occur.

Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser. Keep nails short, press or cool the area instead of scratching, and choose loose fabrics. Keep a record of new medicines, foods, products, travel, heat, and sick contacts. A pharmacist can check whether a simple anti-itch product is suitable, but avoid layering several active creams or using someone else's prescription.

Book an appointment when the rash lasts, recurs, spreads, disturbs sleep, or has scaling, crusting, drainage, or marked tenderness. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, skin peeling, fever, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, or a rapidly painful rash.
