Itchy rash that looks like goosebumps

Bumps centred on hair follicles may follow sweat, shaving, rubbing, or blocked follicles. Heat Rash can produce clusters of prickly bumps in warm, covered areas. Atopic Dermatitis often brings itch, dryness, and rough texture, while Contact Dermatitis may appear after a new product, plant, metal, or fabric. Scabies can cause intense itch, often worse at night, with bumps in characteristic areas and symptoms in close contacts. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Pause newly introduced skincare, detergent, and fragranced products. Keep the skin cool, use a gentle cleanser, moisturise dry areas, and avoid picking or harsh scrubs. Wear loose clothing and change after sweating. Photograph the rash as it changes and record exposures, medicines, exercise, and whether anyone close to you is itchy. A clinician can decide if testing or prescription treatment is needed.

Get prompt medical advice when bumps spread quickly, become painful, fill with pus, form blisters, or persist despite removing an obvious irritant. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rash with severe illness. Night-time itch affecting household members also deserves timely assessment.

Ask whether the bumps are follicular, heat-related, eczematous, or infectious; whether a medicine or contact trigger is possible; and which product is safe for the affected area.
