Itchy rash on the stomach

The waistband, belt buckle, adhesive, detergent or a new fabric can irritate the abdomen or cause contact dermatitis. Heat and trapped sweat may create prickly bumps, while a moist lower abdominal fold may develop intertrigo. A ring with a scaly edge can fit ringworm. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis may produce dry, rough or thickened patches. Scabies can cause severe nighttime itching and small bumps, sometimes with symptoms in household members. A drug rash may be more widespread than the stomach alone. Note whether the skin is dry, scaly, raised, ring-shaped, blistered or oozing.

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Wear soft, loose clothing and change damp garments. Stop a newly introduced lotion, detergent, adhesive or belt until you have clearer advice. A bland moisturiser can support intact dry skin, but avoid applying multiple active creams at once. Keep a short record of foods, medicines, products, exercise and timing, and photograph changes without scratching the area.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, or fever with a rapidly worsening rash. Arrange a clinical review if the rash is spreading, infected-looking, repeatedly returning, disturbing sleep, or not improving after a suspected irritant is removed. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system or a new medicine lowers the threshold for contacting a clinician.

Ask whether the pattern fits contact dermatitis, heat rash, intertrigo, ringworm, scabies or another condition. Show photographs from the first day and bring product or medicine names. Ask whether the skin should be tested, which treatment is suitable for the abdomen, and how to prevent recurrence.
