Itchy Rash on the Front of the Neck: Causes and Care

Perfume, necklaces, shirt collars, sunscreen, hair products, and detergents can cause contact dermatitis on the exposed front of the neck. Heat and trapped moisture may produce small prickly bumps, while rubbing can worsen redness. Atopic dermatitis may cause dry, itchy patches that recur. A sharply bordered, scaly patch may be ringworm, and psoriasis can affect the neck with persistent scale. A new medicine can cause a drug rash that extends beyond the original area.

Remove necklaces and pause fragrance, cosmetics, and newly changed laundry products. Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser. Wear a loose, breathable collar and keep sweat from sitting on the skin. Do not apply strong steroid, antifungal, or combination creams without advice, especially if the diagnosis is uncertain. Record exposures and photograph the rash so a clinician can compare changes.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, breathing or swallowing trouble, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly spreading rash. Prompt assessment is appropriate for fever, marked tenderness, pus, red streaking, or a rash that begins after a new medicine. Arrange a routine review if it lasts, returns after product exposure, or interferes with sleep.
