What should you know about an itchy rash on the face?

Atopic Dermatitis may cause dry, itchy, sensitive facial patches. Contact Dermatitis can follow cosmetics, sunscreen, hair products, fragrance, masks, metals, or cleansing products, including items transferred from the hands. Heat Rash is more likely after sweating in a warm environment. A spreading, scaly edge may fit Ringworm, while a new widespread eruption after a medicine can be Drug Rash. Scabies is more suggestive when night-time itch affects close contacts too. The face has delicate skin, so appearance, distribution, and recent exposures matter when choosing treatment.

Stop new or nonessential products and cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free product. Pat rather than rub, use a simple moisturiser if comfortable, and avoid exfoliants, essential oils, makeup, and shaving over irritated skin. A cool compress may settle itch. Keep a list of medicines and products used before the rash began, and photograph changes in natural light. Do not apply strong steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams to the face without medical advice; facial skin can react to unsuitable treatment.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing trouble, faintness, or a rapidly spreading hive-like rash. Obtain prompt care for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, facial pain, fever, blisters, skin peeling, pus, or redness spreading quickly. Arrange a medical review if the eruption persists, repeatedly returns, spreads, or follows a new medicine. Do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly without advice, but contact the prescriber promptly if a rash began after starting it.
