Short answer

An itchy rash on the body can have many causes, including irritation, eczema, heat, infection, or a reaction to medicine.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a widespread rash may show

Record where the rash began, how it has spread, and whether the skin is dry, scaly, raised, ring-shaped, blistered, or painful. Atopic Dermatitis often causes itchy inflamed patches, while Contact Dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Heat Rash favours warm, sweaty areas. Ringworm may have a scaly advancing edge, and Scabies can cause intense itch with small bumps or lines and may affect people sharing your home. A Drug Rash can appear after a new medicine, but timing and examination are needed to judge the connection. Several rashes can look alike, so avoid assuming the cause from itch alone.

Practical care

Keep bathing brief and lukewarm, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, and moisturise while the skin is slightly damp. Wear loose clothing, keep cool, and use a clean cool cloth rather than scratching. Pause non-essential new skin products and write down recent medicines, supplements, foods, detergents, and travel or animal contact. Do not share towels, clothing, or bedding while a contagious cause is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment after considering your age, health conditions, and medicines.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review when a widespread rash is new, persistent, recurrent, rapidly spreading, or interfering with sleep. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or face, dizziness or faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, purple spots, or fever with a quickly worsening rash. Seek prompt advice after a new medicine if the rash spreads or involves the mouth, eyes, or genitals; emergency symptoms take priority over trying another cream.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which features point toward Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, Heat Rash, Ringworm, or Scabies; whether you should avoid work, school, swimming, or shared linens; and how to control itch without masking important changes.
