What should you know about itchy rash no fever?

A rash limited to an area that touched a new soap, detergent, cosmetic, plant, or fabric may be contact irritation or contact allergy. Hives tend to be raised and change location, while insect bites may appear in exposed areas or small clusters. Dry skin, eczema, and fungal infections can itch without causing a fever. A circular scaly patch, rash between the toes, or symptoms in another household member can provide useful clues. Cellulitis is more concerning when one area becomes hot, painful, swollen, and increasingly red. The absence of fever does not identify the cause or rule out a condition that needs treatment.

Stop any newly introduced skin product and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser, wear loose clothing, and use a cool compress. Keep fingernails short and avoid scratching, which can break the skin and invite infection. Take a photograph and mark the edge of redness so you can notice spread. Ask a pharmacist about an appropriate itch treatment, particularly if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Do not apply steroid or antibiotic creams to an unexplained rash unless advised.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread hives with vomiting. Seek prompt review if the rash becomes painful, hot, rapidly enlarges, forms blisters, affects the eyes or mouth, or develops pus. Arrange an appointment when itching disrupts sleep, the rash keeps returning, spreads to others, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant. A clinician can inspect the distribution and decide whether a swab, scraping, or other test is useful.
