Itchy rash in pubic hair: what to know

Redness around individual hairs after shaving or waxing can reflect follicle irritation or ingrown hairs. A rash beneath tight clothing may be driven by sweat and friction, including Intertrigo or Heat Rash. A sharply bordered, scaly rash that enlarges can occur with Ringworm. Severe night-time itch or itching among household members raises concern for Scabies. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, and a Drug Rash can also affect nearby skin. Small blisters, ulcers, pus, marked tenderness, or genital discharge are reasons not to assume this is simple shaving irritation.

Stop shaving, waxing, and fragranced products until the skin calms. Rinse gently, dry carefully, and wear loose underwear that reduces rubbing. A cool compress may ease the urge to scratch. Avoid picking bumps or sharing towels and razors. Do not squeeze lesions or apply leftover antibiotics, steroids, or antifungal treatment without advice, particularly on genital skin. Photographing the rash as it changes can help a clinician understand its progression.

Book an appointment when bumps are painful, filled with pus, spreading, persistent, or repeatedly returning after hair removal. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, open sores, blisters, or difficulty passing urine. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering reaction. A clinician may distinguish follicle inflammation from a fungal, inflammatory, or contagious cause by examining the skin.
