What should you know about an itchy rash between the fingers?

Frequent handwashing, cleaning chemicals, gloves, and prolonged dampness can damage the skin barrier and cause Contact Dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis may leave dry, cracked, itchy skin. Ringworm can produce a scaly border and may spread beyond the finger spaces. Scabies often causes intense night-time itching and can affect household contacts; tiny burrows or bumps may occur around the hands. Psoriasis can involve thicker, persistent scaling and may affect nails or other sites. A widespread eruption after a new medicine may be Drug Rash.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, then dry carefully between every finger. Use protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with dry cotton liners if suitable, and remove rings before washing. Apply a bland moisturiser after drying. Avoid picking, harsh sanitisers when an alternative is available, and sharing towels. If the skin is cracked, painful, spreading, or scaly, have it examined before choosing a medicated cream.

Arrange care if cracks do not heal, pus or increasing warmth develops, movement becomes painful, the rash spreads, or symptoms persist despite avoiding irritants. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe swelling, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread medicine-related rash.

Ask whether hand eczema, contact dermatitis, Ringworm, or Scabies fits the pattern; whether household contacts need advice; and how to protect the skin while continuing work or frequent hand hygiene. Tell the clinician about gloves, detergents, and new medicines.
