What should you know about an itchy rash around the nose?

Redness and scaling beside the nostrils may follow frequent wiping, cold dry air, fragranced products, cosmetics, or a new cleanser. Contact dermatitis often follows exposure and may burn or itch. Atopic dermatitis can make skin dry, rough, and persistently itchy. A rash that forms a ring or slowly expands may need assessment for Ringworm. Thick, sharply defined scaling elsewhere can occur with Psoriasis. Scabies is more suggestive when itching is intense at night and close contacts also itch.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser to the surrounding skin, keeping products away from the nostril opening. Pause new cosmetics, exfoliants, essential oils, and fragranced balms until the skin settles. Avoid scratching and use a clean cool compress for brief relief. Do not apply steroid or antifungal cream inside the nose without professional advice, because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange medical review if the rash spreads, keeps returning, becomes painful, crusts, oozes, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, rapidly worsening redness, fever, or eye involvement.

Ask whether the distribution suggests contact dermatitis, eczema, infection, or another condition; which products should be stopped; and whether a skin examination or swab is needed. Mention new medicines, cosmetics, nasal sprays, and the timing of each flare.
