What should you know about itchy phlegm throat?

Mucus dripping from the nose can irritate the back of the throat, especially with allergic rhinitis or a common cold. Dust, smoke, dry air, and strong fragrances can also make the throat feel scratchy. A food allergy may cause throat itching soon after eating, particularly when it occurs with lip swelling, hives, vomiting, wheezing, or trouble breathing. Note the phlegm colour, nasal symptoms, cough, hoarseness, and whether the problem follows a particular place, season, food, or exposure. An itchy throat is a symptom, so it does not identify one condition by itself.

Drink fluids regularly and choose warm drinks if they feel soothing. Saline nasal rinsing may reduce mucus reaching the throat; use sterile or previously boiled and cooled water as directed. Avoid smoking, vaping, and known irritants. Wash hands and avoid sharing cups if a cold seems possible. If symptoms follow pollen, dust, or another trigger, reduce exposure and ask a pharmacist whether an appropriate allergy medication is suitable for you. Do not use someone else’s prescription, and seek advice before giving medicines to a child.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, a rapidly swollen tongue or throat, faintness, or sudden symptoms after a food or medicine. Arrange medical assessment for persistent fever, chest pain, dehydration, coughing blood, worsening symptoms, or phlegm with a strong foul smell. A clinician can examine your throat and chest and consider allergy, infection, reflux, or another cause.
