Itchy Nose, Throat and Eyes: What to Know

Allergic rhinitis can make the nose itch and swell, while drainage or mouth breathing irritates the throat. Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itching, watering, and redness in the eyes. House dust mite allergy may be more noticeable during time in a bedroom or dusty room; pet allergy may follow contact with an animal or its bedding. A common cold can sometimes produce watery eyes and throat discomfort, but pronounced itching across all three areas makes allergy worth considering. Symptoms can also be aggravated by smoke, perfume, dry air, or cleaning products. The combination is a clue about the body areas involved, not proof of one condition.

Try to identify the setting and timing of each flare. Move away from smoke, fragrances, and dust, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. A clean cool compress can settle eye discomfort; saline nasal care may clear irritants from the nose.
