What should you know about an itchy neck and sore throat?

An itchy neck may involve the skin rather than the throat. New soap, perfume, detergent, fabric, sweat, or a topical product can cause contact irritation, while hives can occur with an allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis may cause throat irritation through nasal drainage. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, strep throat, or glandular fever can present with a sore throat and may also cause swollen neck glands, but the throat symptom does not identify which condition is present. Acid reflux can irritate the throat without causing a skin rash. Look for timing, fever, cough, nasal symptoms, rash, and exposure to a new product.

Stop any newly introduced scented or skin product, rinse the area gently, and use a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry and intact. Drink fluids, rest, and avoid smoke and foods that clearly worsen throat irritation. Do not scratch vigorously or apply steroid creams to the neck without checking that the product is suitable. Record when the rash or throat symptom began and whether it followed an illness, meal, medicine, or contact exposure.

Emergency help is needed for rapidly spreading hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or inability to swallow saliva. Seek prompt assessment for a severe or worsening sore throat, a muffled voice, neck swelling, dehydration, or high fever. Make an appointment if symptoms recur, the rash persists, or throat symptoms do not improve.
