What should you know about an itchy mouth, throat, and ears?

The nose, throat, mouth, and middle ear are connected, so allergic rhinitis can create itching in more than one area. Sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, watery eyes, or symptoms linked to dust and seasons support an allergy pattern. House dust mite allergy may be more noticeable indoors or on waking. A common cold can cause throat discomfort and ear pressure, usually with other cold symptoms. Itching or tingling soon after eating a particular food raises concern for food allergy, especially if hives or swelling appear. The symptom pattern helps guide assessment but does not identify a diagnosis on its own.

Drink water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use saline nasal care if nasal mucus is contributing. Keep the room comfortably humid without exposing yourself to mould. Wash hands and avoid sharing drinks when you have cold symptoms. A pharmacist can advise whether allergy medication suits your age, health conditions, and other medicines. Avoid putting cotton buds or objects into itchy ears, because this can injure the ear canal. If food triggers the episode, avoid that food until you have received medical advice.

Call emergency services for rapidly developing lip, tongue, mouth, or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Seek medical care if ear pain, discharge, hearing change, severe sore throat, or fever develops. Arrange an appointment for recurrent symptoms, symptoms that interrupt sleep, or irritation that does not settle after the suspected trigger is removed.

Ask whether the distribution fits allergic rhinitis, a house dust mite allergy, a common cold, or food allergy; whether allergy medication is suitable; and whether your ears need examination.
