Itchy Hands in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Pregnancy can make skin more sensitive, and Contact Dermatitis or Dyshidrotic Eczema may cause hand irritation, dryness, or tiny blisters. Athlete's Foot can spread itch around the feet and sometimes coexist with hand symptoms. However, intense itch on the palms or soles, particularly without a visible rash and worse at night, can be a sign of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. That condition needs maternity assessment because symptoms may occur before other clues.

Contact your obstetric or maternity team promptly and describe where the itch is, when it began, whether the palms or soles are involved, and whether it disturbs sleep. Use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm water, loose clothing, and cool compresses. Do not start an oral medicine, steroid product, or Topical Antifungal Treatment without checking pregnancy suitability.

Seek same-day maternity advice for new intense palm or sole itch, itch without a rash, dark urine, pale stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or unusual nausea or right upper abdominal discomfort. Seek urgent help for reduced fetal movement, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling.
