What should you know about itchy groin red spots?

Spots limited to recently shaved skin may reflect follicle irritation or ingrown hairs. Redness in a moist fold can be intertrigo, while a spreading, scaly border may fit a fungal rash. A yeast-related rash can occur in warm folds and may have small spots near the main area. Blisters, ulcers, crusting, pus, or a rash after sexual contact need a clinical assessment because appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Take a clear look without repeatedly rubbing the area. Wash with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser or water, dry by patting, and wear loose clothing. Pause shaving, waxing, and new creams. Keep towels and underwear personal, and change damp garments promptly. Avoid squeezing spots or applying a strong steroid on your own. If a clinician identifies a fungal cause, they may recommend a topical antifungal treatment suited to the affected skin.

Arrange a visit if spots spread, recur, remain unexplained, or do not improve after trigger avoidance. Seek prompt care when redness is rapidly expanding or accompanied by warmth, increasing pain, pus, fever, or significant swelling. Get assessed for blisters, ulcers, or urinary symptoms, particularly after possible sexual exposure.

Ask whether the spots look like irritation, intertrigo, follicle inflammation, or a yeast infection; whether testing is needed; and what can safely be used near genital skin. Describe when they began and any shaving, exercise, product, or sexual exposure beforehand.
