Itchy fever

Itching and fever together can accompany viral illnesses such as chickenpox, common cold, COVID-19, bronchiolitis, or croup when other respiratory or skin symptoms are present. A bacterial skin infection such as cellulitis may cause warmth, tenderness, and spreading redness. Acute bronchitis can bring fever with cough, while brucellosis is a less common possibility linked to particular exposures. A new medicine can also cause an itchy rash with fever and needs medical advice.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, wear light clothing, and avoid scratching the skin. Take your temperature with the same method each time and note when the itching, rash, cough, or other symptoms began. Do not share towels or personal items if a contagious rash is possible. Use fever or itch treatments only as directed on the label or by a clinician, especially for children, pregnancy, or existing medical conditions.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, collapse, a stiff neck, or a purple or blistering rash. Arrange prompt medical care for a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or a child who is unusually sleepy or difficult to comfort. A fever with a new medicine-related rash should be discussed promptly, even if the rash seems mild.

Ask whether the fever and itching fit an infection, allergy, medicine reaction, or skin condition, and whether testing is needed. Share recent travel, animal or food exposure, new medicines, vaccination history, sick contacts, and a clear description of any rash.
