Itchy feet and pregnancy: what to know

Sweat, heat, tighter footwear, and newly sensitive skin can irritate the feet. Scaling between the toes or on the soles can fit Athlete's Foot; small very itchy blisters may fit Dyshidrotic Eczema. A new soap, cream, shoe material, or detergent can trigger Contact Dermatitis. The timing alone cannot identify the cause.

During pregnancy, mention itching that is strong, persistent, or present on the palms and soles to your maternity team. Itching without an obvious rash can need assessment for pregnancy-related causes, so do not assume it is only dry skin.

Keep feet cool and dry, wash gently with lukewarm water, pat carefully between the toes, and choose breathable socks and roomy shoes. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and sharing towels. Photograph any rash and note whether it affects one foot, both feet, the spaces between toes, or the soles.

Do not start an antifungal, steroid, or oral medicine without checking its suitability in pregnancy. A clinician can distinguish eczema from infection and recommend an appropriate option, including topical treatment when suitable.

Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or worsening itching, itching across the body, itching of the palms or soles, or itching that is worse at night without a clear rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, rapidly spreading redness, fever, marked pain, pus, or a hot swollen foot.
