Itchy feet and kidney disease: what to know

Kidney-related itching is linked to changes in the body’s waste and mineral balance. It often affects several areas rather than only one foot, and the skin may look dry or unremarkable. It can be more troublesome at night. Itching alone cannot show whether kidney function has changed, so a clinician must interpret it alongside your history and tests.

A rash, peeling, or itching between the toes points more toward a local skin issue. Athlete's Foot can cause scaling and cracking, Contact Dermatitis may follow exposure to an irritant, and Dyshidrotic Eczema can cause small itchy blisters. These conditions do not imply kidney disease.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm, and choose gentle cleansers. Keep nails short and pat rather than scratch to protect the skin. If you have diagnosed kidney disease, keep taking prescribed medicines and follow your renal team’s fluid and treatment advice; do not change either because of itching.

Arrange a review if the itching persists, spreads, disrupts sleep, or comes with swelling, changes in urination, unusual tiredness, nausea, or breathlessness. Ask before using an over-the-counter antihistamine or cream, since kidney function can affect medicine choices. Topical Antifungal Treatment is relevant only when a clinician suspects a fungal infection.

Contact your healthcare team soon if you have kidney disease and develop new persistent itching, especially if you also notice less urine, increasing swelling, vomiting, confusion, or worsening breathlessness. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, marked drowsiness, or rapidly spreading redness with fever. A sudden rash with facial swelling or throat tightness can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Ask whether your kidney function, medicines, calcium, or phosphate balance could contribute; whether the foot skin needs examination; and which moisturiser or anti-itch treatment is safe for your kidney function.
