Itchy feet after giving birth: what to know

Postpartum routines can leave feet warm or damp, and new socks, shoes, detergents, or hospital products can irritate them. Scaling between the toes points more toward Athlete's Foot; itchy tiny blisters may fit Dyshidrotic Eczema. Contact Dermatitis can appear where a product touches the skin. A rash that began after an antibiotic, pain medicine, or antiseptic should be discussed with the prescriber.

Foot itch can also be amplified by dry skin or healing-related changes elsewhere. The appearance, timing, and whether both feet are affected help separate these possibilities.

Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free moisturiser on dry areas, and clean breathable socks. Dry carefully between toes and avoid sharing towels. Do not scratch open skin or use someone else's prescription. If breastfeeding, check every medicine with a clinician or pharmacist, including products for suspected fungus.

Arrange prompt review for fever, increasing warmth, pus, worsening pain, rapidly spreading redness, or a swollen foot. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Sudden one-sided calf swelling or breathlessness after birth is also urgent.

Ask whether the rash needs examination or testing, whether a medicine or product could be contributing, and which treatment is suitable while breastfeeding. Ask how to distinguish ordinary irritation from infection.
