Itchy feet after C-section: what to know

The operation itself does not identify the cause of foot itching. Dryness, sweating, hospital socks, adhesive products, disinfectants, or a new detergent may irritate skin. Athlete's Foot is more suggestive when there is scaling, peeling, or cracking between toes. Blisters or intensely itchy patches can fit Dyshidrotic Eczema. A new widespread rash after a medicine needs a clinician's assessment.

If there is no rash, check whether itching began after a pain medicine, antibiotic, or antiseptic. This timing can help a clinician distinguish irritation from a drug reaction.

Rinse away suspected irritants, pat the feet dry, change damp socks, and choose loose footwear. Do not scratch broken skin, share towels, or apply leftover prescription creams. Photograph any rash and list new medicines and products. Ask your surgical or maternity team before using an oral medicine or topical antifungal, especially if breastfeeding.

Contact your care team promptly for fever, feeling unwell, pus, warmth, increasing pain, or redness spreading up the foot or leg. Seek emergency help for facial swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, blistering skin, or faintness after a medicine. A swollen painful calf or sudden breathlessness also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether a recent medicine or hospital product could be responsible, whether the skin needs a fungal test, and which treatment is compatible with recovery and breastfeeding. Ask what changes should trigger a same-day call.
