Itchy face and swollen eyes

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchy, puffy eyelids, often alongside watery eyes. Allergic rhinitis, pet allergy, or house dust mite allergy may contribute when nasal symptoms or an exposure pattern is present. Cosmetics, skin products, medicines, or an insect sting can also irritate the face or trigger swelling. The speed of change and symptoms elsewhere matter more than swelling alone when judging urgency.

Move away from a suspected trigger and gently rinse exposed skin. Remove contact lenses and eye makeup, wash your hands, and use a cool compress over closed eyes. Do not rub, scratch, or apply unadvised creams around the eyes. If a clinician has given you an emergency allergy plan, follow it. A pharmacist or doctor can advise about allergy medication after checking your symptoms and medicines.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Obtain prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing eyelid or facial swelling, eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, fever, or spreading redness. Even without those signs, recurrent swelling deserves a clinical review to identify triggers and reduce future exposure.

Ask whether the episode resembles an allergy, contact reaction, or eye problem, and what to do if it happens again. Record when swelling began, what touched your skin, any new medicine or food, and whether you had hives, nasal symptoms, or breathing changes.
