Itchy eyes with mucus

Stringy or clear mucus can occur when an allergic response makes the eye water and the surface produces extra protective fluid. Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching and may affect both eyes. Thick, sticky, or worsening discharge can also occur with infection or eyelid inflammation, so mucus colour and texture should be considered with redness, pain, and vision symptoms rather than alone.

Clean the eyelids gently with clean water and a fresh, clean cloth for each eye. Wash hands before and after care, avoid rubbing, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Remove contact lenses until symptoms have settled and a clinician says they can be worn again. A cool compress may reduce itching. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication, but do not use another person's prescription drops.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, strong light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, an injured eye, or discharge that is heavy and difficult to clear. Get urgent help if swelling involves the tissues around the eye, or if facial swelling comes with breathing or swallowing trouble. Arrange an assessment when symptoms persist, recur frequently, or affect one eye more severely.

Ask whether the mucus pattern fits allergy, infection, or eyelid irritation; whether testing or an eye examination is needed; and which treatment is appropriate. Tell the clinician when the discharge appears, whether it returns after sleep, and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms.
