Itchy eyes: what to do

Itching often reflects irritation or an allergic response affecting the eye surface. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly presents with itching, watering, and redness in both eyes. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing or a blocked, runny nose. House dust mite or pet allergy can trigger symptoms after exposure, although the pattern alone cannot identify the exact cause.

Wash your hands before touching your face, pause contact lens use while the eyes are irritated, and rinse with clean water if dust or another irritant entered the eye. A cool, clean compress can soothe the lids. Keep windows closed when outdoor allergens are troublesome, wash bedding regularly, and keep pets away from the bedroom if they trigger symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a change in vision, injury, or thick discharge. Seek urgent help if swelling spreads around the eye, the eye cannot open, or breathing or swallowing becomes difficult. If itching keeps returning or interferes with sleep, an examination can help separate allergy from infection, dryness, or another eye problem.

Ask what may be triggering the itching, whether your eye surface or eyelids need examination, and which drops or allergy treatment fit your symptoms. Mention contact lens use, new cosmetics, recent cleaning exposure, nasal symptoms, and any change in vision.
