What should you know about itchy eyes and a sore throat?

Allergic rhinitis can cause an itchy nose and eyes, while mucus draining from the nose may irritate the throat. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may cause throat discomfort with cough, congestion, fever, chills or tiredness; itchy eyes can occur alongside some viral illnesses but is less specific. Strep throat and tonsillitis more often cause pronounced throat pain and difficulty swallowing, with fever or swollen neck glands possible. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially with a sour taste, hoarseness or symptoms after lying down, but it does not explain every itchy-eye pattern.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, fragrances and other irritants. Saline nasal spray may reduce dryness or clear mucus, while a cool compress can soothe itchy eyes. If infection is possible, wash hands regularly and avoid close contact with people at higher risk until you understand the cause. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on symptom relief and whether testing is appropriate, especially if fever, exposure to a respiratory infection or worsening throat pain is present. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Arrange medical advice if the sore throat is severe, symptoms are worsening, swallowing remains difficult, or you are not improving. Prompt care is needed for dehydration, a muffled voice, drooling, one-sided throat swelling, breathing difficulty, severe eye pain or vision change. Seek emergency help for inability to breathe or swallow, rapidly increasing facial or mouth swelling, confusion or faintness.
