What should you know about itchy eyes and a runny nose?

Allergic conjunctivitis can make the eyes itch and water, while allergic rhinitis can cause a clear runny nose, sneezing and nasal itching. Symptoms may start soon after exposure to dust, pets, pollen or another airborne trigger and may ease when you leave that setting. A common cold can also cause a runny nose, but it more often brings a sore throat, cough, tiredness or feeling unwell; itch is less characteristic. Irritant exposure such as smoke or strong fragrance can affect the eyes and nose without being an allergy.

Try to identify and limit exposures linked with flare-ups. Wash hands and face after outdoor time, keep rooms free of smoke and strong scents, and avoid rubbing the eyes. Saline nasal rinsing may help some people clear irritants when performed with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication and whether an eye or nasal product is suitable. Follow label directions and check first if you have glaucoma, other eye disease, take regular medicines, or are pregnant.

Arrange a clinical review when symptoms last longer than expected, repeatedly disrupt sleep, or do not settle after trigger avoidance. Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, vision changes, severe one-sided symptoms, thick discharge, facial pain, high fever or breathing symptoms. Emergency help is appropriate for throat tightness, wheezing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or rapidly worsening symptoms.
