What should you know about itchy eyes from pollen?

Pollen-related allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, redness and a gritty sensation in both eyes. Sneezing, an itchy nose or a runny nose may occur at the same time because the nose and eyes respond to related allergens. Symptoms may be stronger outdoors, after gardening, or during a period when particular plants release pollen. Pollen is not the only possible explanation: dust mites, pets, irritants and infections can produce overlapping symptoms. Thick discharge, pain or one-sided symptoms deserve a closer assessment rather than assuming pollen is responsible.

Wear glasses or sunglasses outside to reduce particles reaching the eyes, then wash your face and hands when you come indoors. Change clothes after outdoor activities and avoid rubbing your eyes. Keep bedding and indoor surfaces clean, and consider advice from a pharmacist about allergy medication or eye preparations. Use products exactly as directed; some eye drops are unsuitable for frequent use or for people with certain eye conditions. Contact lenses can trap irritants, so ask an eye-care professional what to do if wearing them makes symptoms worse.

Seek advice if itchy eyes continue despite avoiding pollen, recur in a way that limits daily activities, or are difficult to distinguish from infection. Obtain prompt care for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, a marked swelling around the eye, or pus-like discharge. Emergency help is needed if pollen exposure is followed by breathing difficulty, throat tightness, facial swelling or faintness.
