What should you know about itchy eyes, nose and ears?

Allergens such as dust mites, animal dander or airborne particles can irritate the moist lining of the eyes, nose and ear canals. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly causes eye itching, watering and redness, while allergic rhinitis can add sneezing, a blocked or runny nose and an itchy nose. Ear itching may come from the same nasal allergy response or from local irritation, eczema, earwax or infection. A pattern that appears after cleaning, being around pets, or spending time in a particular room can offer useful clues, but it does not identify the trigger on its own.

Avoid rubbing your eyes and ears, because friction can worsen swelling and irritate the skin. Rinse your face after outdoor exposure, keep windows closed when air quality or airborne allergens are troublesome, and reduce dust in sleeping areas with regular cleaning. A cool clean compress may soothe itchy eyes. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable, particularly if you have other conditions, take regular medicines, or are treating a child. Do not put cotton buds or unprescribed drops into an itchy ear.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or do not improve with sensible trigger avoidance. Prompt assessment is needed for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, vision change, pus, a swollen eyelid, significant ear pain, discharge, hearing loss or fever. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives, as these may signal a serious allergic reaction.
