Itchy eyes in the morning: what may be causing them?

Bedding, mattresses, carpets and curtains can collect dust and other particles that contact the eyes overnight. [House Dust Mite Allergy](/conditions/house-dust-mite-allergy/) may cause itching, watering, sneezing or nasal blockage on waking. A pet sleeping nearby can add another indoor trigger. Dryness from sleeping with the eyes partly open, a fan, or air conditioning may cause a gritty or burning feeling. Crusting on the lashes can have several causes and cannot be diagnosed from timing alone. [Allergic Conjunctivitis](/conditions/allergic-conjunctivitis/) is one possibility when itch is prominent.

Wash pillowcases regularly according to their care instructions, keep pets away from bedding if contact brings symptoms, and reduce dust in the bedroom with damp cleaning. Avoid shaking blankets near your face. On waking, wash your hands before touching your eyes and use a cool compress for comfort. Seek medical advice if morning itch continues, keeps returning, or comes with persistent redness or eyelid swelling. Get urgent help for severe pain, light sensitivity, a sudden change in vision, an injury, or thick discharge. Do not share towels or eye products, and pause contact-lens use while the eyes are irritated.
