Itchy Eyes and Graves’ Disease: What Should You Know?

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition that can make the thyroid produce too much thyroid hormone. In some people, the immune reaction also affects the muscles, fat and connective tissue around the eyes. This is called thyroid eye disease, or Graves’ eye disease. It may cause a gritty feeling, watering, redness, light sensitivity, eyelid swelling or pressure behind the eyes. Itching alone is not specific to Graves’ disease and commonly has other explanations.

Thyroid eye disease is more concerning when eye symptoms occur with bulging-looking eyes, eyelid retraction, double vision, difficulty moving the eyes, facial pressure or changes in vision. Symptoms can appear before, during or after thyroid symptoms, so a normal-feeling thyroid does not by itself rule out an eye-related complication. An examination can separate allergy, dry eye, infection and thyroid-related inflammation.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, because rubbing can worsen irritation and swelling. Use a cool, clean compress over closed eyelids, reduce exposure to smoke and other irritants, and take contact lenses out if they make the discomfort worse. Do not use someone else’s eye drops or leftover prescription drops.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or eye specialist if the itching persists, keeps returning, or occurs alongside known Graves’ disease. Bring a list of thyroid medicines and describe when the eye symptoms began, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any change in vision.
