Itchy Eyes Causes: What They Can Mean and What to Do

The itch may affect one or both eyes. Watery eyes, redness, burning, or a gritty feeling can help show whether the surface of the eye is reacting to an allergen or becoming irritated.

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itching with redness and watering, especially after exposure to pollen, dust, or another trigger. Nasal sneezing or a blocked, runny nose may occur with allergic rhinitis. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible triggers in some homes.

Dryness, smoke, wind, chlorine, makeup, contact lenses, or rubbing can irritate the eye surface. A sticky discharge, eyelids stuck together on waking, or marked redness can occur with conjunctival infection. Pain, light sensitivity, or a change in vision suggests a problem that needs more careful assessment.

Do not rub your eyes, because rubbing can worsen surface inflammation and may injure the cornea. Wash your hands, rinse away a suspected irritant with clean water, and use a cool compress over closed eyelids. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the eyes are irritated.

Notice when the itching starts and whether it follows time outdoors, cleaning, contact with animals, or use of a new product. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication or another treatment is suitable for you; do not share eye drops with anyone else.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong sensitivity to light, injury, chemical exposure, or a feeling that something is stuck in the eye. Seek urgent help if the eyelids or area around the eye swell quickly, or if breathing difficulty or facial swelling accompanies the eye symptoms.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, keep returning, do not settle after avoiding a suspected trigger, or include thick discharge. Contact-lens wearers should seek advice sooner when redness, pain, or vision changes occur.
