Itchy eyes and sneezing: what to know

Allergic conjunctivitis can make the eyes itchy, watery and red. Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, nose itching, congestion and a watery discharge. Pollen, dust, mould and pet allergens may affect both areas at the same time. Symptoms that follow cleaning, outdoor activity or animal contact can provide useful clues. Viral infections may also cause sneezing, but eye itching and a repeating exposure pattern support an allergy explanation. The symptoms do not by themselves establish a diagnosis, and a clinician may consider skin, nasal or medication-related irritation as well.

Move away from a suspected trigger, rinse your face, and change clothes after heavy outdoor exposure. Keep hands clean and avoid rubbing your eyes, which can increase irritation. A cool compress can calm the eye surface. Saline spray may help wash irritants from the nose. Discuss allergy medication with a pharmacist or doctor rather than combining products without checking their ingredients. If symptoms are frequent, write down where you were, what you were doing and how quickly symptoms appeared; this can make a consultation more useful.

Seek routine care if the pattern lasts, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep, concentration or daily activities. Get urgent help if you develop breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, severe eye pain, light sensitivity or new vision changes. Prompt examination is appropriate for thick discharge, major eyelid swelling, or symptoms after an eye injury.
