Itchy eyes and nose with sneezing: what to know

Allergic rhinitis can irritate the lining of the nose, causing sneezing, itching and a watery runny nose. Allergic conjunctivitis can affect the eye surface, producing itching, watering and redness. House dust mites, pet allergens, pollen and mould can be triggers. Symptoms may be stronger after cleaning, around animals, or in rooms where dust collects. A cold can also cause sneezing and a runny nose, but marked eye itching points more toward an allergic pattern. This symptom combination does not identify one cause on its own.

Notice when symptoms begin and record possible exposures, such as bedding, air-conditioning, pets or outdoor air. Wash your face and hands after exposure, avoid rubbing your eyes, and use a cool clean compress for eye discomfort. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants when performed with sterile or previously boiled and cooled water. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable, including how to use eye drops or nasal treatment safely. Keep windows closed when outdoor air clearly triggers symptoms and wash bedding regularly.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, affect work or school, or do not settle with trigger avoidance. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, a change in vision, or an eye injury. Thick discharge, significant eyelid swelling or symptoms in one eye also deserve prompt clinical advice.
