Itchy ears, itchy throat and a stuffy nose

The combination can fit allergic rhinitis, especially when symptoms recur around dust, pollen, mould or animals and are accompanied by sneezing or watery eyes. A common cold can also cause nasal blockage and throat irritation, although itching tends to point more toward an allergic response. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Allergy-related symptoms may begin soon after exposure and continue while the trigger is present. A blocked or runny nose can allow mucus to drain toward the throat, creating an itchy or scratchy feeling. Ear itching may come from irritation around the ear canal or from the connected nose and throat passages; putting cotton buds or other objects in the ear can worsen it.

A cold often develops with a sore throat, cough, tiredness or mild fever and usually changes over several days. If symptoms follow eating a particular food and include hives, lip or tongue swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty, seek urgent help because this pattern can indicate a food allergy.

Avoid known triggers where practical, keep indoor spaces well ventilated, and reduce exposure to dust if it worsens your symptoms. Saline nasal spray or a saline rinse may loosen mucus; use a clean device and prepared or appropriately treated water for rinsing. Drink fluids and rest if you may have a cold.

A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose an allergy medication based on your symptoms, other medicines and health conditions. Do not scratch inside the ears or use leftover ear drops. If congestion persists, one-sided ear pain develops, or symptoms keep returning, arrange an assessment.

Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, tightness in the throat, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face. These symptoms can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pain, high fever, discharge from the ear, marked hearing loss, difficulty swallowing fluids, or symptoms that are not settling. Children, people with asthma, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier advice.

Ask what pattern best fits your symptoms, whether testing for an allergy is appropriate, and which treatments are suitable with your current medicines. Mention when the symptoms started, possible triggers, fever, ear pain, hearing changes and any reaction after food.
