Itchy dry skin on the pubic area: what to know

Recent shaving, waxing, sweat, tight garments, and scented products can irritate pubic skin. Regrowth can feel itchy, while tiny cuts from hair removal may sting. Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis may cause recurring dry or scaly patches beyond the pubic hair. Asteatotic eczema is another inflammatory cause of dryness. If there are bumps around hairs, folliculitis may be involved; a clinician should assess any lesions, discharge, or sores rather than relying on itch alone.

Pause shaving, waxing, and fragranced products until the skin is calm. Clean with a mild, fragrance-free product, rinse well, and pat dry. Wear loose underwear and change damp clothing promptly. Apply a bland moisturizer such as an Emollient Therapy product to external skin only; avoid placing creams inside the vagina or on the tip of the penis. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Avoid borrowing or layering medicated creams without a diagnosis.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, open sores, blisters, or a new lump. Genital discharge, burning with urination, or concern about a sexually transmitted infection also warrants assessment.
